OPEN/PROMOTIONAL Barstow Unified School District is Accepting Applications for LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE (LVN) Classified Pay Range 38: $22.82/hour Monday-Friday, ON CALL/AS NEEDED Deadline to File: Tuesday, February 19, 2019 (4:00 P.M.) 
 
An examination will be given for the position of LVN for the purpose of establishing an eligibility list and/or filling a vacant position. 
 
Job Summary: Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services. 
 
Minimum Qualifications Required to Apply: Graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program or junior college required.  Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Two (2) years acute nursing experience and involvement with public contact.  Working with children with special needs in a school setting preferred. A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis. California certification as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). A valid California Drivers License. Current DMV printout. Insurable by District liability insurance carrier. Valid First Aid Certification. Valid CPR Certification.

JOB DESCRIPTION Barstow Unified School District Licensed Vocational Nurse 
Purpose Statement The job of Licensed Vocational Nurse is done for the purpose/s of supporting the educational process with specific responsibilities for overseeing the medical and physical needs of all students; implementing Targeted Case Management and/or specialized health care plans directed by physicians; ensuring district health care practices comply with the laws relating to student health issues; providing appropriate immediate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; and serving as a health care resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; and assisting with mandated health screenings and identifying health problems for referral to appropriate parties for proper follow up treatment. This job reports to the Director II of Pupil Services 
 
Essential Functions ? Administers first aid, medication and specialized medical treatments (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, ostomy care, tube feeding, ventilator care, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children. ? Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.), hygiene, sleep habits, nutritional and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, providing care within scope of practice, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements. ? Assists Health Clerks for the purpose of supporting them in the performance of their functions ensuring procedures are in accordance with established administrative guidelines, legal requirements, and student health needs that require nursing judgement within scope of practice. ? Assists in directing student health services for the purpose of prioritizing project activities, ensuring utilization of personnel in compliance with site requirements; and meeting mandated requirements. ? Assists District Nurse with mandated screenings (e.g. vision, dental, hearing and/or back/scoliosis screenings, etc.) for the purpose of referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children. ? Collaborates with parents, students, staff, health care providers, physicians and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services and health updates; providing information and complying with legal requirements. ? Compiles and inputs data for the purpose of preparing reports as needed and/or mandated. ? Conducts home visits as directed for the purpose of providing follow-up health care as directed by site administration, RN or Supervisor. ? Develops individual student care plans for the purpose of providing follow-up on all referrals, addressing students' health needs, providing direction to site personnel and/or and implementing directions provided by parents and/or physicians for continuity of care. ? Maintains contact with parents/guardians for the purpose of advising them of changes in student health and/or recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention. ? Maintains up to date and accurate manual and electronic student confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports, immunizations, oral health, screening reports, updated list of students requiring medication, detailed account of each

student medications required, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards. ? Monitors students with chronic illnesses for the purpose of assisting the child in achieving the highest possible functional level. ? Monitors students referred for illness, injury or for vital signs (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, pulse, oxygen, blood glucose, respiration, etc.) for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating or providing follow-up care. ? Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams (e.g. 504, IEP, SST, SARB Board, health forums, Health Clerk meetings, etc.) for the purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs; service delivery; educational programs; mandates and school health laws and regulations; and/or improving skills and knowledge. ? Performs the job functions of a Health Clerk when necessary for the purpose of supporting department functions. ? Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. reports, correspondences, LEA billings, supply and equipment inventory, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information. ? Refers students requiring additional medical attention for the purpose of providing required follow-up treatment and services. ? Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and/or appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines. ? Researches a variety of topics relating to health and medical care (e.g. wellness, nutrition, treatment protocols, childhood diseases, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to staff, students, parents, and the public. ? Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding, telephone health related calls that only a Nurse can answer, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action. Other Functions ? Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. 
Job Requirements:  Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: planning and managing projects; using pertinent software applications; administering first aid and/or prescribed medications; nursing processes; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and recognizing a variety of pediatric health conditions. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.  Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: health standards and hazards; codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; recordkeeping and record retention practices; safety practices and procedures; treatment and observation modalities; health assessment methods and practices; Nursing Practice Act; and pediatric and adolescent health conditions.

Working Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling,  frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing.  The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Experience Job related experience is required. Education Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area. Equivalency Graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program or junior college required.  Bachelor's Degree preferred.  Two (2) years acute nursing experience and involvement with public contact.  Working with children with special needs in a school setting is preferred.
